The Birth of a Foodie
Dear Readers,
Big changes are coming to my blog. The most important is the the blog is both changing name and locale. I will now edit and contribute to the (tentatively named) Local Flavor section at Wolverine CuiZine. Don’t be afraid to follow me over: the new blog will be just like the old one, but with more stuff! This summer of blogging has been delicious, and so, without further...
A Gentleman's Guide to the Grocery Store
I have a few roommates that are facing a terrible reality for the first time: they must go to the grocery store or they will die of starvation. (Men of 801, this is for you) I faced the same terrible truth last year, so I have a barrage of tips and tricks for anyone who has never shopped for their own survival.
First, a step-by-step guide to the grocery store process. All grocery stores are...

Chiles rellenos from the Paupered Chef →
These chiles rellenos look like they taste extraordinary. Somebody make them for me, please. I don’t think I can handle a recipe that makes a good chef say:
“Had the process not taken hours, nearly frazzled my nerves, and been fraught with so much failure, I might think about making it again.”

Back from the dead, blogging
After a short and homeless hiatus, I’m back to the blog and I have a ton of events and recipes to dish out over the next few weeks. First up is a film screening:
Come to Michigan Theater next Thursday for a film screening hosted by Slow Food Huron Valley. If you are new to the Slow Food movement, it began in 1986 in Rome when Carlo Petrini created an organization to resist the opening of...

Certified Organic: meaningless? (UPDATE)
UPDATE: The USDA has just announced an official audit of its National Organic Program (NOP). What an accomplishment for the great art of complaining! (via The Daily Green)
An article from last month in the Washington Post casts doubt on the integrity of federal organic certification. From that article:
Three years ago, U.S. Department of Agriculture employees determined that synthetic...

Michigan's Superfruit: the Sour Cherry
Reading through the blogs yesterday, I saw this article about Michigan’s superfruit, the tart (or sour) cherry. Late July is cherry harvesting season, and 70-75% of America’s tart cherries are produced in Michigan (from the MDA).
Sour cherries are bursting with nutritional value. From the LA Times:
Tart cherries are rich in anthocyanins, antioxidant compounds that are also found...

Starbucks experiments with 'debranded' stores in...
The Starbucks Corporation, a brand that has become synonymous with gourmet coffee drinks, has become so large that the ubiquity of its shops is actually hurting its image. In cities where a Starbucks can be found on almost every corner (check your Starbucks density), the corporation hopes that removing the green logo from their shops will encourage consumers to drink more Starbucks coffee. The...

In a recent Greenpeace survey of the environmental friendliness of leading U.S. seafood retailers, Trader Joe’s was “the worst performing national seafood retailer” on the list. Each retailer was ranked in four categories; Trader Joe’s score card is abysmal:

This terrifying site is overflowing with trans fats and unnatural additives. I can feel my arteries clogging. My favorite? The Potluck Burger. Yummmm.
A burger with sliced hot dogs, potato salad, mac and cheese, tomato, ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise.

NPR's Top 10 Reasons Why the BMI is Bogus
nutritionista:
[Ed. Note: I think it’s okay to use BMI as a ballpark for a target healthy weight range, but it should never be the ONLY factor in determing a goal/healthy weight.]
1. The person who dreamed up the BMI said explicitly that it could not and should not be used to indicate the level of fatness in an individual.
The BMI was introduced in the early 19th century by a Belgian named...

Temporary Living Situations: A Review of the Basic...
Emma Christensen at the Kitchn was recently forced to move temporarily into a small apartment with just enough space for the bare kitchen essentials. If this sounds like your permanent living space (I know it describes mine perfectly), take a look at this list of the kitchen essentials she brought along. As you stock your own kitchen, her list might be a good guide.

Save a Stale Baguette, Make Garlic Bread
Baguettes are delicious, but after a day on the counter they are almost inedibly hard. Luckily a day old baguette still makes great garlic bread! Here are two garlic bread options from Simply Recipes. Just cut the amounts down to size. I found about 3tbsp of butter and 1 clove of garlic was just right for one baguette. Add crushed red pepper for some spice!

Q: Aren't organics elitist? People can't buy...
A: I once heard Eric Schlosser answer a similar question aimed at his book, “Fast Food Nation.” He pointed out that social movements have to begin somewhere and that several began with elites but ended up helping the poor and disenfranchised - the civil rights, environmental and women’s movements, for example.
I would add the organic movement to this list. It has already...

Roasted Garlic
img {margin:2px;}

Garlic has a multitude of uses in a simple kitchen: sauteed vegetables, garlic bread, hundreds of sauces and thousands of recipes rely on garlic. An Italian meal without garlic is unthinkable. A head of garlic is cheap (less than a dollar) and, thanks to its pungency, contains a surprising amount of spice. In fact, I often find that its hard to use the...
